Support Group Leader of the Year
Support Group Leaders shepherd members of their groups to receive support, inspiration and the tools to continue the home education of their individual families. Much of the leaders' sacrificial efforts are unnoticed as they emanate from a heart of service. CHEC acknowledges these vital people in the homeschool community with the Support Group Leader of the Year award given annually at its family conference in June.

Ruth Beechik Award
In 2000 CHEC established the Ruth Beechik Award to honor Colorado homeschooling leaders. In 1986, after a distinguishing career in the education field, Dr. Beechik channeled her talented writing skills to promote home based discipleship. A true pioneer in every sense, Dr. Beechik gave credibility to a spawning movement that welcomed her expertise. Standing against a wave of conventional worldly wisdom that condemned home education, Dr.Beechik soon became a beloved writer and counselor to many new homeschooling families. Her compassionate timely wisdom came to a pinnacle with the publishing of her book, A Biblical Home Education, where she boldly proclaimed that “Since the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, anti-God teaching can only lead to foolishness."
Each year at the annual Homeschool Day at the Capitol Rally, CHEC honors past and present homeschool leaders who have distinguished themselves in Colorado. In the spirit of Dr. Ruth Beechik, we seek out those who have given of themselves sacrificially, who stand on the principles of God’s Word, and who understand the truth that wisdom can only be taught in the fear of God. May God in His mercy grant us many more leaders who typify this courageous woman of God.
Dr. Ruth Beechik lives in Golden, Colorado, and still writes books. Her greatest thrill continues to be helping a new family discover the joy of homeschooling.

The Spark Plug Award
Volunteers are the backbone of every good non-profit organization. Each year CHEC utilizes a network of over 300 volunteers. These volunteers are comprised of busy families who have a love for homeschooling, for God and for His people. Running a state-wide organization takes folks who are willing to work many different and odd jobs. CHEC volunteers find themselves doing anything from stuffing envelopes, to working 20 plus hours a week on a special event. While many come for the joy of fellowship and blessing, most do it for the shear joy of promoting homeschooling and love for the Lord.
Each year at the annual Christian Family Conference in June, CHEC honors a unique volunteer whose efforts set them apart by an unusual amount of energy, inspiration, dedication and self sacrifice. The Spark Plug recipient is the kind of person that every organization wishes that they could replicate over and over again. Once the award is given, the honoree’s name is added to a distinguished list of individuals on a plaque permanently and prominently displayed in the CHEC office and the individual holds the affectionate title of “Sparky” for the following year.
